For Beatrice “Bea” Johnson Cornwell, it was never too late to pursue a dream—and her legacy will ensure that other Murray State students have the same opportunity.
A longtime administrator at Murray State University’s Paducah campus, Cornwell understood firsthand the determination it takes to balance education, work and family. After leaving school following the seventh grade, she earned her GED in 1977, began college at age 48 and ultimately earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Murray State. She became the first college graduate in her family and spent nearly two decades encouraging others to follow their own educational paths.
In honor of what would have been her 85th birthday, an estate gift of $277,670.25 will carry her commitment forward through the Beatrice Johnson Cornwell Scholarship. At the family’s request, $250,000 will establish lasting endowment support, while $27,670.25 will provide scholarship assistance to students today.
The scholarship prioritizes part-time and non-traditional students, including those who have earned a GED or transferred from a community college to Murray State’s Paducah campus.
Through thoughtful estate planning, Bea Cornwell has transformed her personal journey into a lasting investment in others. Her story is a powerful reminder that a planned gift can honor a life, open doors and create opportunities for generations of Racers to come.
