Lifelong Giving Leads to a Legacy of Student Support
Dr. Jerry Swayne Patey believed in supporting Murray State University students—he was a member of the John Wesley Carr Society, with more than 20 consecutive years of giving back to the University, supporting students in biology and chemistry, specifically. When the University learned of Dr. Patey’s passing, his plan to continue to assist students at Murray State University in obtaining an education to prepare them for a career in the field of chemistry and biology, was put into motion by his family.
Dr. Patey was from Hickman, Kentucky, and he graduated from Murray State University in 1964 with two bachelor of science degrees—one in chemistry and one in biology. While a student at Murray State University, he was a member of the S.A.A.C.S. (Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society) and Tri-Beta (Biology Honor Society).
Dr. Patey went on to attend the University of Louisville College of Medicine, graduating in 1971. He practiced internal medicine in Hampton, Virginia, and New Port Richey, Florida, for most of his career, owning his own practice. He later worked for the VA in Southaven, Mississippi. Dr. Patey also served proudly in the United States Army.
Dr. Patey’s legacy of continuing to support students in biology and chemistry through his estate gift will have immeasurable and permanent impact. Murray State University students for generations to come will be gifted an education thanks to his kindness, his generosity and his planning.
